A group of jewellers have come together, and we are all designing new pieces of jewellery. Tresor (treasure in Cornish) is inspired by the collections at the Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery in Truro. Below is some of my design and thought process. It is still very much a work in progress, but I thought I would give you a glimpse into how I have developed the ideas.
I love museums and treasures; therefore, choosing one theme or idea to explore was tricky. Should I forge a Lunulae or use casting techniques first used 4000 years ago or explore designs inspired by Neolithic man? I settled on the mineral gallery. I have loved rocks and gems since childhood. I have also inherited a collection of Cornish minerals from my Grandfather, who studied geology in his retirement
.
I wanted to explore the minerals and metals that are beneath our feet right here in Cornwall. I still have so much I don't know about geology, but it has been fascinating looking a little deeper into it. So I set out to create an atomic model of the metals that were once mined here. I made some moving maquettes and test pieces to begin with. I also thought I wanted a piece of the mineral that the metal is found within,at the centre of each piece. In order to do that, I set about searching for someone who could help me cut and polish stone. I found a geologist who cuts and polishes Cornish minerals, but there were also limitations to the types of cuts and rocks that could be used.
A deadline is a brilliant thing, as it is forcing me to focus and create for fear of a blank display plinth. I hope you can come along to Tresor. Come discover unique, handmade wearable treasures inspired by the Museums and Gallery's collections. There is a private view on the 31st October from 6-8pm. The fair is open over the weekend 1 & 2 November 2025. Entry included in Museum ticket or free with Museum Annual Pass (£10, under 18s free)
